During the Year of the Word, we celebrate some of the inspiring missionaries we support globally

One of the reasons Missio is unique is that we work exclusively through the Church to reach the poorest members of God’s family. We support Priests and Sisters in projects which are created and run on a local basis. That way, we ensure people receive not only the vital aid, food and care they desperately need, but also the hope, compassion and inspiration of Christ’s love.

Every penny, pound and prayer you put in your Red Box supports the vital work of missionaries overseas. Thank you for being part of the Missio family. You can donate online here>>

While we support missionaries financially and through our prayers, they in turn bring their wisdom and prayer to our lives. It’s what being part of the global Church family is all about.

2020 is the Year of the Word. So we asked the missionaries we work with and the people they care for to share their favourite scriptures. Here are two of the inspiring answers we received.

Sr Seena and Sr Meran, Little Eden Project, South Africa

Sr Meran and Sr Seena (pictured above) both work in the Little Eden Project, which cares for people of all ages with disabilities, providing physiotherapy, education and care.

Sr Seena became a Nun when she was 21 and gained a degree in Special Education at 27. All the Sisters in her order undertake this degree because they run schools and hospitals.

Sr Meran has been a Sister of the Imitation of Christ for 15 years. She was attracted to the congregation’s charism of ‘Prayer and Service’, and to its role models, St Martha and St Mary.

Their favourite scripture is Matthew 25:40:

In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.

Michael Althib, Seminarian at Beit Jala Major Seminary

Michael Althib, Seminarian Beit Jala

Michael came to Beit Jala Seminary in the Holy Land from California. His parents are from Iraq, but they moved to California before he was born. He says that even as a boy,‘I loved the Mass. When on the altar I would feel closer to God’.

Michael started attending daily Mass and recalls how, during one weekday liturgy, the following passage from the story of Abraham spoke to him directly. It confirmed in his heart that God was calling him to Beit Jala, where he is completing his training to be a Priest:

God said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your kindred and your father’s house for a country which I shall show you’.

– Genesis 12:1

Spreading the Word

We’re constantly inspired by the missionaries we work with, and by you, our supporters who make our work possible! We’d love to hear your favourite scriptures, which you can share with us on Facebook and Twitter. Throughout the year we’ll be sharing stories and scriptures from around the world, showing how our brothers and sisters live and share the Word throughout the world.

Our work wouldn’t be possible without you! With your support we can bring hope today, and build a strong Church for tomorrow. You can donate to Missio here>>
