On Tuesday, Bishop Paul Swarbrick, Chair of Trustees, and Fr Gary Brassington, Diocesan Director for Clifton concelebrated a special Remembrance Mass in the Missio Chapel for all those who have left a legacy to Missio in the past year, and all our supporters and friends who have gone before us to their eternal rest.

At a recent #MissionMass in @dioceseoflancaster, we were delighted to chat to Jean, a Local Secretary with a long family history of involvement with the Mill Hill Missionaries.

Jean has been a Local Secretary for @stclarefulwood since 2009. But her involvement with the Red Box stretches back 70 years, due to her personal connection with Mill Hill.

Jean’s aunt, Paula, was a Mill Hill Sister (a Franciscan Missionary Sisters of St. Joseph), who resided for many years at St Joseph’s College, North London, the base of the Mill Hill Missionaries between 1870 and 2006.

Jean remembers many happy childhood holidays spent visiting her beloved aunt at St Joseph’s, and fondly remembers playing in the fields near the college grounds.

Sadly, her aunt died aged just 43. But this family bereavement motivated Jean to continue supporting the Red Box in Sister Paula’s memory. This culminated in Jean taking on the role of Missio Local Secretary in 2009.

The Sisters of St. Joseph were established in the 1860s in Lancashire, with their earliest members drawn from Salford and Lancaster Dioceses. By the 1880s, some of these Sisters were travelling to Southeast Asia on missionary postings to Borneo and Sarawak.

During the Month of Remembrance we remember especially all our friends and supporters who have died. Today, we pay tribute to Gertrude Hilton, who was a Missio Local Secretary for over 40 years. Neve Shalom-Wahat al Salam, a bilingual name that literally means ‘Oasis of Peace’, was created in 1972 by a Dominican Priest named Bruno Hussar. The village is on the hills between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and offers an example of coexistence between the peoples in the Holy Land. Read more on our website.

On All Souls Day, we remember the loved ones we have lost. May they be granted eternal rest, and may perpetual light shine on them.

We remember all living and deceased supporters of Missio and the Mill Hill Missionaries at Mass in our chapels. Mill Hill Priests offer Mass for the deceased in November, and remember them at Mass every Sunday and in their Daily Office.
