In May we pray with Pope Leo that everyone, from large producers to small consumers, be committed to avoiding food waste, and to ensuring that everyone has access to quality food.
Growing food and cutting waste as a community in Malaysia
Fr Oniz MHM has created a demonstration garden in his Malaysian parish, teaching parishioners to grow fruit and vegetables while sharing harvests with everyone. He rears rabbits and chickens, using their droppings for organic pesticide and fertiliser. The parish is committed to minimising waste and achieving self-sufficiency. They have replaced plastic plates and cups with reusable ones, planted flowers in recycled tyres and established a youth-run recycling centre for plastics and tins.
Fr Oniz says:
‘A healthy environment makes a healthy mission. As missionaries we need to be in touch with nature. The youth have seen how important it is to live out their faith by being stewards of creation.’
