Missio volunteers make our work possible. Without their dedication, commitment and hard work, we simply could not do what we do. We want to pay tribute to individuals who have shared their stories and thoughts with us.
Kathleen is the Local Secretary at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Felling. She shared how she got involved as a Local Secretary for Missio.
‘I became involved with the Mill Hill Missions round about 1986. I attended a slide show about the Mill Hill Mission work at our Local Secretary’s house. The aim of the night was to recruit a volunteer for the role of the Local Treasurer. My friend who was with me volunteered me, because as she put it ”I was treasurer for the tea club at work”! So that’s how it started.
‘I took over the role of Secretary and Treasurer for St Patrick’s, Felling around about 2002. I have been helped by a team of Collectors over the years, and they are some of the most dedicated and amazing people you could meet.
‘The most rewarding part is knowing that you have helped countless numbers of people in different parts of the world. The money we collect can make a huge difference to someone’s life; someone we will never meet, but we know they are out there waiting for our help.’
Every penny, pound and prayer
Theresa Codd, Missio’s Regional Community Fundraiser (North) says:
‘In my role at Missio, I so enjoy the opportunities I have to correspond and chat with Missio’s volunteers and to learn about what inspires them to volunteer their time and skills. Often, as in Kathleen’s case, someone recognises their talents and invites them (or volunteers them!) to get involved.
Kathleen and her team, like so many in parishes across England and Wales, stand in solidarity with communities overseas, and they change lives for the better.
‘At times, we may be tempted to think that our contribution is insignificant but, as the saying goes, ‘if you think you are too small to make a difference you have never spent the night with a mosquito!’’
