Dear friends,
We recently had the rare opportunity to meet Cardinal Giorgio Marengo and hear first-hand about mission in Mongolia, home to the youngest Catholic community in the world.
Cardinal Marengo, the Apostolic Prefect of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia and second youngest Cardinal in the world, spent his valuable time with us meeting volunteers, supporters and VI Form students in London, Birmingham and Stockport.
It was a great privilege to hear from the Cardinal about his experience of mission in a country where people are just beginning to know Jesus and hear his Gospel. The Cardinal’s clear passion for mission and for the people he serves are a great encouragement to us all to persevere with joy in our mission of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth.
Born in Italy in 1974, Cardinal Marengo joined the Consolata Missionaries and was ordained in 2001. He studied theology for three years at the Pontifical Gregorian University and then missiology for three years at the Pontifical Urban University which later culminated in a Doctorate in Missiology.
The then Fr Marengo, was sent on mission to Mongolia, where he has served for 23 years. In 2020, Pope Francis appointed him the Apostolic Prefecy of Ulanbaatar and in 2022, the Holy Father made him a Cardinal.
I know he takes with him our prayers for his continued mission of ‘whispering the Gospel to the heart of Mongolia’ through respect, listening, sharing, being changed and enriched by God.
