Jacob

In the latest issue of Mission Tomorrow (downloadable here) we share stories from future priests studying in Cameroon. Here is one seminarian’s story…

‘I know I have something to contribute,’ Jacob says. ‘I just want to do something simple, to be of service. As students we reach out to the local community and help local people in need.

‘At the moment the situation is traumatic; we hear gunshots every day. We have to transform this situation for our sake and the sake of our communities.’

Jacob was ordained Deacon on 29 June 2018. He grew up in a religious family and loved going to Mass.

A love for family

Jacob comes from a large family. His love and respect for family shines through in his ambition to reach out to the older women in his community, through his ministry. ‘Sometimes when they are widowed they are left with nothing,’ he says. And sadly, it’s true that there’s a stigma attached to widowhood. Women often face persecution, and risk losing their possessions and livelihoods.

Jacob is acutely aware of the risks of being a priest in Cameroon’s present environment. He knew Fr Cosmas Ondari MHM, who was tragically murdered whilst helping people affected by the ongoing conflict..

Jacob says: ‘This morning I asked to speak to the Spiritual Director. I am very afraid about what is going on. He consoled me and asked me to write a prayer.’

Jacob says Missio UK’s support gives him strength. ‘Because of you, I know that we are loved and cherished. Thank you, it encourages us and gives us the courage to continue in our ministry.’

Could you help a seminarian like Jacob?

It costs around £700 a year to train a future priest in Africa or Asia. Despite huge sacrifices from their communities and families, and the Seminary’s efforts to grow their own food, it’s simply not enough.

Missio believes no vocation should be turned away through lack of funds. That’s why we offer a sponsorship scheme in relationship with five major seminaries around the world. If you, your family, community or parish would like to sponsor a future priest, click here to find our more today.
