With less than a week to go before the beginning of the Extraordinary Month of Mission (EMM2019), we’re seeing an amazing response from the Catholic Community around the world.

His Holiness Pope Francis has declared this October a special month of prayer and action. EMM2019 calls us all to renew our missionary commitment and to share the Good News of Jesus with all peoples. And the ways individuals are expressing that commitment are truly inspiring. From cutting plastic use to visiting sick or elderly neighbours; from campaigning and volunteering to just finding time to be quiet and listen to God, the global Church family is putting  EMM2019 into practice in the world.

#MyMission

During  August and September, people around the world have been sharing their personal mission on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtags #MyMission #EMM2019. It’s a worldwide social media campaign to reignite our missionary spirit and share that with our sisters and brothers around the world. And you can find out how to get involved here.

#OurMission

But from the beginning of October, the campaign focus moves from individuals to groups. #OurMission asks schools, organisations, orders, congregations, dioceses, parishes and communities to step up and let the world know their collective mission. Groups can share their mission on social media using the hashtags #OurMission #EMM2019. What could you and your group achieve or share this October?

Perhaps your contemplative order’s mission is to pray the EMM2019 prayer. Or perhaps your school’s mission is to make everyone welcome and included. However your group feels called to get involved, you can find resources and information on the EMM2019 page.

EMM2019 Prayer Chain

When we pray together, we share in God’s love and are inspired to make the world a better place. That’s why during October, Pope Francis invites everyone to join the EMM2019 Universal Prayer Chain.

Everyone, everywhere, all over the world is invited to pray the official EMM2019 prayer, every Friday after the Angelus, throughout the month of October.  Through praying together we will revitalise and reawaken our missionary spirit.

Mission in the modern world

As the Pope’s official charity for mission, Missio is proud to help everyone get behind this world wide initiative.

‘All of us who believe in Jesus Christ as Son of God and Saviour received our faith from God through those missionaries, who long ago left their homes and families to share their faith with those in foreign lands,’ says Fr Anthony Chantry, Missio’s National Director.

‘I have seen the fruit of that work in many countries in Africa and Asia, where there is a host of young and dynamic Catholic communities committed to following Jesus Christ. Yet we must not make the mistake of assuming that mission abroad has no place in our modern world.’

‘The Holy Father challenges us to be in a permanent state of mission, for “each of us is a mission to the world, for each of us is the fruit of God’s love”.

‘I hope that this month will help us all look back in thanksgiving for all that has been achieved by the missionary work of the Church and look forward with hope to a future when all peoples will know the saving and liberating love of Jesus Christ.’

As EMM2019 approaches, we’re seeing the amazing power of mission across the world. We’re witnessing just how vital the Good News of Christ is in our modern world. As we journey through October, and get ready for World Mission Sunday, we’ll bring you updates and stories from around the world which show the healing power of God’s love.  And we’ll share just how much your prayers and donations help our missionary brothers and sisters achieve.
